Abstract:

Journal recounts some of Hardy's experiences as a student at the College of California in Oakland and later life. Includes a list of faculty and instructors, a hand-colored membership list of the Lincoln Society, of which he served as president in 1868, and various accounts ledgers. Miscellaneous news clippings, correspondence, and a flyer for his candidacy as Councilman-at-Large from the Seventh Ward (Oakland, California).

Lowell James Hardy, Jr. was born in Lexington, Massachusetts in 1844. His family sailed to California in 1850 and settled in Oakland in 1851. He graduated in the third class (1866) of the College of California (precursor to the University of California) and then attended Harvard Law School. With his wife Mary Little Hardy, he had three children, Estelle, Lowell and George. Hardy served in the California State Assembly for San Francisco County, 1880-1881, and died November 24, 1928 in Alameda County, California.
